Time line for Ryde from 1843

1843. Queen Victoria and party land at Ryde Pier Head 28th August and in 1844 leased Osborne House and purchased it in 1845.

1845 First Horticultural show held in Ryde town hall 3rd July.

1846 The Ryde & IW building society founded.

1849 Forensic society of Ryde was founded 6th December.

1851 The population of Ryde was 7,147

1855 In January ,A plan of the proposed Esplanade was submitted to the Lords of the Admiralty for approval. The section between George Street slipway and Cornwall street slipway was carried out in 1855/6/7 by the reclamation of some 20acres from the sea at a cost of £5000

1855 William Thomas Rickard was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in the Putrid Sea in Crimea on 11th October. He died in 1905 and is buried in Ryde Cemetery.

1855. Isle of Wight mercury printed 5th May.

1856 Sam Browne was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in a battle at Seerporah India on 31st August .He died in 1901 and is buried in Ryde cemetery.
